5 Tips on How Get the Most Out of Your Kauai Whale Watching Experience

Humpback Whales (or Kohola in Hawaiian) make their yearly winter migration to the warm Hawaiian waters, where they mate and give birth to their young. During their time in Hawaii, these incredible sea mammals can be seen breaching their 40 ton bodies out of the water or slapping their immense tails upon the ocean's surface. In the beauty of the Garden Island, Kauai whale watching season is here, offering a magnificent setting in which to witness Humpback activity. So grab your binoculars and follow these 5 tips to the best way to observe these awe-inspiring animals.

1. Be Where the Whales Are Whales are in Hawaiian waters as early as November and as late as May but the ideal time to catch a glimpse of them is in February and March. Up to 10,000 Humpbacks are expected to migrate from Alaska to Hawaii this year, where they will spend their time mating, birthing and raising their young in the waters surrounding the island chain. In this archipelago some islands see more whale activity than others. Though whales can be spotted on Oahu, whale-watching opportunities are in even more abundance off the coasts of Maui, the Big Island and Kauai. Kauai's Na Pali coastline is an ideal location for watching Humpbacks in action. This remote and pristine coastal region is accessible only via a rugged 11 mile hiking trail or by boat.

2. Take a Boat Tour The best way to see whales is on the water. Nothing compares to the experience of witnessing these massive creatures up close and in their element. Various boat companies on Kauai offer seasonal tours specifically aimed at whale watching. These excursions are available aboard powered, sailing catamarans or rigid hull inflatable rafts. The stability of a large catamaran vessel provides a smooth sail for those interested in cruising with a little more comfort. However, for those seeking some adventure, rafts bring passengers even closer to the action skimming low upon the water's surface with quick maneuverability.

3. Give Them Space Whatever kind of boat you choose, the captains of these vessels are highly skilled and trained in how to share the water with the whales and their babies. All companies adhere to strict whale watching guidelines that include Hawaii's standard "100 yard minimum" rule, keeping anyone (swimmers, kayakers, boaters) at least 100 yards away. This doesn't mean that boaters can't enjoy close encounters with these amazing animals. An experienced captain knows just the right way to respectfully position the boat so that the whales may come closer of their own accord.

4. Hear Their Songs Though Humpbacks don't have vocal chords, their songs can be heard more than 20 miles away as they pass air through their respiratory system producing sounds deep underwater. Scientists have discovered that though female Humpbacks create sounds, it is the male that has the capability to craft sophisticated melodies. At one time it was thought that these serenades were connected to a mating ritual, as the songs are almost always sounded in the breeding area. More recent finding conclude that the male's songs may actually be less amorous and more of a warning to perceived threats. You can experience these songs for yourself, as many of Kauai's boat tours provide special headphones designed to listen to these unique reverberations as they echo through the underwater world.

5. Help Protect Them The commercial whaling industry nearly drove the Humpback whale population to extinction in the first half of the 20th century. As a result, federal laws were put in place to protect the whales. It is estimated that the world's Humpback population is now somewhere between 30 and 40,000. Though their numbers are stabilizing, there are still threats to their health and wellbeing. You can support the preservation efforts for these remarkable sea creatures by learning more about Humpbacks and the programs designed to protect them. Support legislation that furthers this cause and patronize companies that employ environmentally responsible practices. Help keep oceans and beaches clean. You can even connect with Kauai's Surfrider Foundation, and participate in their monthly beach clean ups.
Viewing the massive Humpback whale in the wild is a memorable experience that is made even more incredible in the setting of Kauai's gorgeous natural beauty. It's an opportunity that only comes around once a year. So get your camera ready and scan the horizon. The whales have returned to Kauai.

Wine Regions that Toast the Most from Coast-to-coast

When planning a trip to “wine country,” many think of California’s Napa Valley first and foremost. But what would the reaction be if you told your friends you were taking a trip to wine country -- in Arkansas, Texas, or Indiana?

You won’t be alone if you venture to one of these rapidly-growing wine regions, or to one of the many popular food and wine destinations in Washington, Ohio, Oregon or Michigan. Just to name a few.

You could call it a classic example of supply and demand, as it appears the number of vineyards and wine-themed travel destinations are growing along with the number of food and wine enthusiasts. More and more travelers are using the enticing combination of food and wine as the focal point of a vacation getaway.

In fact, online travel agency Orbitz (www.orbitz.com) recently identified the fastest-growing food and wine destinations in the United States. It may come as no surprise that Napa Valley is still king, almost doubling its growth in Orbitz bookings since 2005, but there’s growing competition from its neighboring states to the north, as well as others in the south and Midwest.

Other regions graded highly include the second-ranked Texas Hill Country, Arkansas Wine Country (3rd) and Ohio’s Grand River Valley (6th). Aside from perennial favorites including Sonoma and a handful in Washington and Oregon, these destinations may be lesser known to those outside of their home state. But lesser known does not necessarily translate to smaller quantities when it comes to the number of wine touring options for travelers.

For instance, it may come as a surprise to folks not hailing from the Buckeye State that Ohio alone features 97 wineries.

A few travel tips for budding wine enthusiasts:

1. Book your flight and hotel as a package versus booking ala carte for added savings.

2. Think outside the box and do your homework. You might be surprised to learn of a number of good wine regions that could be within short driving distance.

3. Plan to road trip? Book a pre-paid hotel room to manage your costs up front.

4. Don’t drink and drive! Online travel agencies like Orbitz.com now let customers book car service within certain destinations for their wine sipping excursions, or ask the hotel concierge about a local car service they trust.

5. Pack light. When touring vineyards and wineries, you’re surely going to want to take some of your favorites home with you. Save the shipping costs and take home what you can readily pack or carry.

As wine producers’ high season approaches, thousands will pack their bags and fire up their taste buds for a pilgrimage to a favorite, or perhaps a new food and wine destination. And whether that brings them to New York or Florida, Rhode Island, Missouri or Virginia, or points in between, they can travel the country and probably never run out of harvest celebrations or elegant wine tastings.

Dude Ranches: A Green Vacation Choice for Your Family

As more people are becoming aware of environmental issues, vacationing green is a growing travel trend. Families are seeking vacation options that offer activities that respect the earth, and experiences that create cherished memories and a renewed connection to nature.

“Dude Ranches in our association are environmentally kind and a great way to bring your family closer on your next vacation,” says Colleen Hodson of The Dude Ranch Association, an organization that represents over 100 ranches in the western United States and Canada. “People come to enjoy the outdoors, have an adventure and relax in nature. After they leave, they often have a renewed appreciation for the environment.”

So what is it like to vacation on a dude ranch? Imagine cool, fresh mountain air, riding a trail on your trusted horse, participating in a cattle drive during a beautiful sunset, and hearing the dinner bell call you to a delicious meal. And this is just a start; many ranches offer spas, rafting, fishing, hunting, and special adult and children’s programs.

If this sounds like a vacation you might be interested in, there are options for every budget. Plus, many ranches participate in activities that help preserve the environment that they rely on so you can feel good about your trip.

For example, Rocking Z Ranch in Montana uses a stationary diesel motor that is powered by recycled vegetable oil to pump water for irrigation. This worked so well, the ranch took the idea one step further by using the vegetable oil to make biodiesel after taking out the fatty acids. They use this to run the tractors, loaders, an excavator, dozer and diesel pickup during the summer months.

Coffee Creek Ranch in California respects the environment by not spraying their fruit trees with any chemical pesticides. And like many hotels and travel establishments, you have the option to get fresh towels every day or hang them up and reuse them as a way to conserve water.

Recycling is another aspect that dude ranches are embracing. Keep in mind, with some ranches being far from major cities where a recycling program might exist, it’s a bit harder than simply putting items in a bin and putting it at the end of the driveway every week. Wilderness Trails Ranch in Colorado collects bottles, cans, plastic and paper from the approximately 38 guests and 30 staff that stay at the ranch each week and loads a large trailer to take into town 30 miles away.

“Successful ranching depends on a positive relationship with the earth, therefore ranchers know that they need to treat it with care. This relationship influences a visitor’s experience at a dude ranch and often brings them a deeper appreciation for the environment in which they live,” adds Hodson.

A ranch offers activities for the whole family. Maybe your daughter loves horses and has always dreamed of lopping across a grassy meadow, or your son wants to learn how to rope a steer. While your wife enjoys some time in the spa, why not try some fly fishing? Then you better rest up so you can all go whitewater rafting the next day.

So if you are looking for a vacation that will leave your family with memories to last a lifetime and a closer relationship with Mother Nature then a vacation at Wilderness Trails Ranch, Coffee Creek Ranch or The Rocking Z Ranch are the destinations you are looking for. For more information about vacations where your family can embrace the great outdoors visit www.guestranch.com.

Craving a Ski Escape? Check Out an Unexpected Spot – Sunny California

If you’re heading west this winter to hit the slopes, you may be following many other ski bums who will be flying straight over the Rocky Mountains and landing in sunny California.

The Golden State is home to the most popular destinations for a growing number of skiers this season, according to the Orbitz Insider Indez (www.orbitz.com). California boasts the two most popular spots for skiers and snowboarders for the 2007/2008 season, with Lake Tahoe taking over the number one spot, and Mammoth Lakes, Calif. checking in at number two. Online travel agency Orbitz compiles its Index based on future hotel and vacation package bookings.

Worry not Rocky Mountain High! Mountain Time still attracts a huge ski crowd, with six of the top 10 spots on Orbitz’ list: Park City, Utah; Breckenridge, Colo.; Jackson Hole, Wy.: Steamboat Springs, Colo. And Vail, Colo.; Snowmass, Colo.; Keystone, Colo.; and Winter Park, Colo.

For some, mixing passions in a single vacation is the way to go. The Orbitz Insiders say an increasingly popular vacation option combines the best of both worlds -- golf and skiing. For those planning late winter and early spring trips, yes, there are domestic destinations where you can readily do this, including Lake Tahoe, Calif.; Snowbird, Utah and others. For many, to be on the slopes in the morning and the links on the afternoon is as close to paradise as you can get.

Although many travelers have already planned winter getaways, it’s not too late to make reservations. Now is prime time for booking for the spring, industry experts say. Here are some tips for those planning an escape to the mountains:

* Book as early as possible to find the best rates but also check last-minute deals.

* Book a vacation package. Combining air and hotel is a great way to save on trip costs.

* Pack smart. Few can pull off a ski trip without checking bags, so make life easy and only carry on what you need for the flight.

* Consider lodging in neighboring towns. Staying slope side or ski-in/ski-out is often more expensive. Lodging options nearby with shuttle service to the mountain is a cost-saving option

Also, make a checklist of everything you’ll need. Ski trips require a lot of packing and more “take alongs” than the usual vacation. A checklist will help ensure you don’t forget anything, and save you from having to buy any ski essentials last minute. Not to mention, any time spent in the shops is time taken away from the slopes. But if you don’t have skis to take with you on your winter adventure or don’t want to take them with you, most resort towns will have plenty of rentals readily available.
